The Regular Season of the 2020 LEC Summer Split just finished after some of the craziest weeks ever experienced in the history of the European competition.
Six teams out of ten have made it to Playoffs, and some of these six fortunate teams have been a huge surprise for many fans. One of them is SK Gaming, who ended the last Spring Split in the 9th position, with only four victories on their score.
For Summer, the German team did some roster changes, and from that moment, they looked like a brand new team… they defeated some of the “historically-strongest” teams, like G2 Esports once in the first round-robin, or Origen twice in the whole split.
Like the LEC as a whole, SK Gaming’s Summer Split has also been like a rollercoaster. Every week was different, and every day the results changed, but in the end, SK Gaming finished in 4th position and thus, qualified for Playoffs.
Right after their last match of the split, the leader of the team, the AD Carry Juš “Crownshot” Marušič, joined VPEsports to talk about this season and what is coming next. Enjoy!
Interview with Crownshot:
Hello Crownshot, you just played your last match of the Regular Season against Fnatic. You couldn’t win, but still, you have qualified for Playoffs. How are you feeling right now?
I feel pretty good, even though our game today was a bit weird, but… to see everyone put us so down at the start of Summer, and having defied expectations and prove people wrong, for sure it feels very good.
If someone told you at the beginning of the Split that you were going to qualify for Playoffs in a better position than Fnatic, would you believe it?
Probably not if you told me 4th (laughs), but after playing scrims and stuff, I thought there was a possibility for us to make Playoffs if we do well… and it does feel like the meta fits us, and we had a decent read of the patches and performed it when it mattered, I guess.
Also, a lot of teams kind of collapsed, which helped us too.
What happened to you, guys? You made some roster changes as other teams did, but your improvement has been huge, you look like a brand new team, while other teams don’t.
Well, I think that I and Limit are better bot-laners than we were in Spring, the meta suits our mid-laner more, and the top-laner also helps the team’s dynamic.
We also changed the Coaching Staff, while this bot-lane meta was helping us a lot because, before that, we had this Miss Fortune meta, but the AD Carries couldn’t really 1v9, we did not have this huge impact.
But now it helps us, we have Ezreal, Aphelios, and Champs like these. I could also play Twitch or Caitlyn, that are coming to the meta now. We are kind of a bot lane-focused team, so all of this combined, together with some teams doing worse than they should, helped us to be here.
You are performing great and many people are talking about you right now but, how do you feel? How do you think you are performing?
It is always hard to rate myself personally. I would say I did prove that I am a good AD Carry, and I am on the top of this region, but I also would like to prove myself even better and make it to Worlds.
I do think I played bad some games, there was one game against Fnatic when I had a pretty big error, and the first game against Mad Lions I played a bit bad too… but overall I think that my Split was pretty decent.
I also think we are better as a team, they are playing around me and making me look good, and that helps, for sure.
Some people are voting you as MVP. Is it important for you? What would it mean for you to get the MVP?
I personally think I don’t deserve it. I think I didn’t play well enough.
My personal vote would be to Caps. I think my performance was pretty good, it obviously would mean a lot for me to win it, but I don’t think I deserve it. I think that other players were bigger parts of… other players were better than me this Split.
I wouldn’t call myself MVP.
Well, we will see who gets it, but for now, you are in Playoffs, it is time to play Bo5… how do you prepare for that?
During the Regular Season, when everything is Bo1 and you play against different teams every week, it is very different from Bo5, because now you have a long time to prepare for the Patches, and pretty much every team knows what works for them.
You can study the enemy team a lot because you have a whole Split of their games to watch, so you can prepare specific strategies, specific drafts… it tests you much more because you need to have very different draft strategies prepared, different champions…
I think it is very fun to play Bo5, I have missed it, for sure (laughs).
What do you think is going to happen if you make it to Worlds? How is the team going to react?
It would be a great honor. I think everybody would be very happy, but I don’t want to think too far ahead, because we first have the first round in Playoffs, and then we need to beat another team in a Bo5 so… obviously that is the goal now.
The first goal was Playoffs, we reached it, but now I would like to take this more “step by step” and pretty much focus on my individual performance to be high, because I think that is the most important thing, and if I make sure it is good, then other things will come as well.
To give an end to this interview, what would you say to your fans and SK Gaming fans?
I really appreciate all the support from all the fans. It really means a lot because Spring was really hard for you and me… for our team as well…
I will make sure we will beat Schalke 04 and make you guys proud, so thank you very much, I really appreciate it.
