Perfect World to Host $200K Perfect World Dota 2 League

Chinese game publisher Perfect World announced plans Tuesday to host a  Dota 2 esports competition called the Perfect World Dota 2 League (PWL), in order to deal with the lack of Dota 2 competitions in China during the COVID-19 pandemic. Perfect World revealed that it is working with major Dota 2 teams in China, as well as in other regions in Asia.

Perfect World said in its announcement that PWL is a major part of the Chinese Dota 2 professional system and that the competition will feature $200K USD in prize money, It will feature “A+B” two tiers, which means a relegation system will be  added into the Chinese Dota 2 scene.  The competition will start on Oct. 28, with three seasons planned for the event that will run until the end of this year.

Perfect World has not disclosed whether this competition series will feature a live audience.

Industry insiders have already expressed frustration on a lack of communication between Perfect World and teams; For example, Chinese Dota 2 organization Team Aster CEO Zhili Guo stated on Chinese social media that the Dota 2 ecosystem needs to improve its basic regulation first rather than just hosting a single competition.

Team Aster is a member of the Chinese Dota 2 Association (CDA), an organization created by Dota 2 teams in China. CDA partnered with Chinese online tournament organizer Fuming Wenhe to host a new Dota 2 competition called CDA-FDC this week. The competition started on Monday, featuring ¥600K RMB ($90K) in prize money, and seven major Chinese teams including PSG.LGD, EHOME, Vici Gaming, Royal Never Give-Up, Invictus Gaming, 4AM, and Team Aster.

For Chinese Dota 2 teams, Perfect World has created a scheduling conflict between CDA-FDC and PWL competitions forcing some organizations to choose between the two events.
