Riot Games developers have provided a detailed update on the current status of League of Legends (LoL) skins. This update includes information on Thematic development, legendary skins, new technology, and more.
More LoL skins for champions
Previously, Riot developers promised an influx of skins for the lowest play rate champions. So far, they’ve delivered on their commitment. They’ll even be able to exceed their goal and create close to 140 skins by the end of this year. The remaining champions left to receive a skin are Nautilus, Skarner, and Ornn. Luckily, since the Riot team has additional time to produce more cosmetics, the following champions will be next to receive new skins:
- Aurelion Sol
Additionally, fans can expect more skins coming up for higher play rate champions, including a Legendary Lee Sin skin.
“Aurelion Sol will be appearing in a brand new thematic that we’re currently calling Dragonmancers. Aurelion Sol awaits the ascent of a warrior worthy of receiving the power of the storm.”
“Never content with his extant creations, Viktor’s latest innovation has forged an experimental alloy that shifts between liquid and solid states. Incredibly flexible yet nigh-indestructible, the new zoophagus assault constructs, or ZACs, spring onto the battlefield, harvesting and consuming any resistance that stands in their way.”
“Though many in the Resistance find Singed unsettling, few can deny his efficacy in pushing back the machine threat. For Singed, the only thing that matters is driving back Viktor’s creations, whatever the means.”
Creating the perfect skins
In order to come up with successful cosmetics for these champions, Riot studies the purchase rate and sentiment measurements of released skins. This includes questioning the number of times a skin has been purchased, or the reason behind the purchase. For example, when Aurelion Sol gets his new skin, Riot wants players to purchase it for reasons other than the fact that A-Sol finally has a skin. They want to push meaningful themes and better experiences for champion mains.
Legendary skins, Ultimate skins, and skin Tiers
Aside from new cosmetics for low play rate champions, Riot plans to revamp Legendary skins. They have taken feedback from players regarding animation adjustments and designs. Because of the complexity of Legendary skins, Riot had to come up with a better plan on how to produce these exclusive cosmetics.
In response to the feedback, Riot plans to invest more time and budget on creating meaningful Legendary skins that provide a unique playing experience. This includes investing time in producing higher-quality VFX, SFX, and modeling.
For Ultimate skins, Riot believes that players want new-tech behind the extremely exclusive cosmetic. With these expectations, the team admits that it’s been difficult trying to translate new Ultimate designs into something that’s technologically-special. Keeping this in mind, Riot has revealed they are currently working on a new Ultimate skin to be shipped out later this year.
