Trading cards seem to have become all the rage recently, particularly for collectors. In the world of Pokemon, for example, we have seen people who are willing to pay more than $220,000 for a single card, while YouTuber Logan Paul dropped $2 million on cards for his own collection.
But Pokemon isn’t the only trading card game people are paying attention to of late. Instead, the most valuable card to have been sold in recent memory – The Black Lotus – comes from Magic: The Gathering.
For those who don’t play Magic: The Gathering, it’s pretty similar to Dungeons and Dragons in that the cards depict fantastical creatures, abilities, lore, and artwork. Just like Pokemon, each card comes with its own unique powers and playstyles, as well as a color associated with a particular type.
Also like Pokemon, there are cards that have been banned from tournament use because they are simply too powerful. Such is the case with the Black Lotus card. This card has been banned from tournament play because of its unique ability – namely, it doesn’t require any mana to play, and it can add three mana of any color to your pool. This means that you can cast spells much faster than you would normally be able to.
The card that went for half a million dollars was sold at auction on eBay. The thing that made this particular card unique, though, wasn’t its condition (although it was MT-10, according to GamesRadar). Instead, it was the fact that it was signed by the artist. The artist in question – Christopher Rush – set the tone for the initial run of Magic: The Gathering cards with the art style that can be seen in The Black Lotus.
Other cards that have been sold for absurd amounts have been a Charizard – which was sold to Logic for $250,000 – and a Blastoise that fetched $360,000. The Blastoise was one of two cards of its kind, which might be why it sold for so much. If the trend continues, 2021 may prove to be a revival year for trading card games. Collectors already seem keen to catch ’em all.
