2020 has somehow become even more of a disappointment because Cris Tales has been delayed to 2021. Thankfully, it appears that it will only be for a short time.
For those unacquainted with the game, Cris Tales is an indie love letter to classic JRPGs like Chrono Trigger, as well as being inspired by modern titles such as Persona 5. Originally supposed to launch on November 17, the game’s release date has been pushed back to early 2021, according to a recent report from Gematsu.
The CEO of Dreams Uncorporated Carlos Rocha Silva stated that Cris Tales needed more development work after receiving feedback from the demo. He said that they’ll be taking extra time to polish an experience that they’re “sure you will all love and cherish.” Silva also explained that making Cris Tales is quite a monumental task, as the team has to create multiple timelines simultaneously. He compared making Cris Tales to developing three different video games.
If you have any further questions for the development team of Cris Tales after this delay, they will be hosting an AMA thread on Reddit on October 16 at 12pm PT. Silva also teased that they will be showing fans a sneak peek at what they’ve been working on.
The main mechanic and gimmick of Cris Tales is that you can peer into different timelines: the past, the present, and the future. This is why the UI in the game is split into three different sections.
The JRPG-inspired title is set to include over 20 hours of gameplay and will be entirely based on 2D art assets, so it’s no wonder that it’s taken Dreams Uncorporated six years to make Cris Tales. What complicates things even further is that your choices will “dynamically reshape the world,” according to the game’s Steam page.
Cris Tales will be releasing on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia sometime in early 2021. There is currently a free demo you can check out if you’re intrigued.
