Crysis Devs Reveal New "Can It Run Crysis?" Graphics Mode

Crytek has revealed the brand new “Can It Run Crysis?” mode for Crysis Remastered.

Back in the day, Crysis was the benchmark game that all other games were compared. It’s punishing technical requirements made even the most cutting-edge hardware work for every rendered frame, and the meme of “can it run Crysis?” became a stand-in phrase for asking someone how impressive their computer was.

Based on the minimum system requirements released just last week, Crysis Remastered won’t be nearly as exclusive. It’ll run on relatively modest hardware just fine, but Crytek still seems to want to maintain their reputation for making games that demand the most of their customers’ hardware.

That’s what the new “Can It Run Crysis?” game mode is for. Exclusive for Crysis Remastered on PC, this unlocked and unlimited game mode will devour every last bit of system resources to showcase the game as beautifully as your rig can possibly render it.

“Today’s post is dedicated to our PC community,” Crytek tweeted out yesterday. “We want to show you, for the very first time, an in-game screenshot using the new ‘Can it Run Crysis?’ graphic mode, which is designed to demand every last bit of your hardware with unlimited settings – exclusively on PC!”

The posted image certainly looks pretty, with a fog-covered cliffside and many fine details able to be picked out from the jungle and forest surrounding the player. But a still image isn’t the best option when it comes to showing off a game’s graphics. Anyone can make a pretty still image–it’s what a game looks like when you string a whole bunch of those renderings together at 120 frames-per-second that matters.

While Crysis Remastered will run on a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti or a Radeon Vega 56, getting the most out of the remaster will require an RTX-enabled video card such as from the RTX 20-series. The upcoming RTX 30-series also seems like a perfectly viable option, although you’d have to wait for those cards to be released over the coming months.

Crysis Remastered arrives September 18 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
