Fans of emotional devastation and anguish will be pleased to know that Emily is Away <3, the thrilling conclusion to the Emily saga, is scheduled for an April 16, 2021 release on Steam. Following up on indie developer Kyle Seeley’s two previous Emily titles, players can expect to go on an emotional and nostalgic journey through late 00s social media where their hearts will be crushed by the girl of their dreams. It’s…kind of heavy.
For those unaware of what Emily is Away even is, the game launched back in 2015 and took the indie world by storm. While not heavily marketed or anything, it accurately captured the essence of early 00s instant messengers with a near-perfect recreation of AIM. It also told an emotionally dense story about two recent high school graduates that just seemingly were never in the right place at the right time.
Essentially, everything plays out like a visual novel with some light branching paths. This was expanded quite nicely in Emily is Away Too, the sequel that followed in 2017. It stands to reason that with <3 dropping AIM and going more for a Facebook vibe, there will be even more character development and options for players to customize the experience to their liking.
I just don’t know if I’m ready to have my heart be broken yet again. It’s strange to see so much of yourself within a video game, but Emily is Away speaks directly to my generation. We’ve all experienced the same scenarios this game portrays and it can be hard to confront your past when you’ve grown from it. Still, self-reflection is never a bad thing and it could be incredibly useful for many in the present.
