Gravity Rush Movie Coming From PlayStation Productions

Sony is making a Gravity Rush movie, according to a new report. The film still has no confirmed cast members or distributor, but it does have a writer and a director.

According to Deadline, Gravity Rush will be adapted into a film based on the 2012 action title. Anna Mastro is set to direct following a prolific TV career that saw her helm Disney+’s Secret Society of Second Born Royals as well as episodes of The Rookie, Just Beyond, In The Dark, The Bold Type, and LA's Finest. Emily Jerome is writing the script after achieving the 2017 Black List in the thriller Panopticon. She’ll also be working with Sony to adapt Among The Bros, a thriller based on the true story of a drug bust in Charleston college.

Gravity Rush first released for the PS Vita in 2012 but was later remastered for the PS4 in 2015. The game stars Kat, an amnesiac who discovers she can control gravity to walk on walls or even fly. She uses her powers to help the people of Hekseville and fight off the monstrous Nevi all while working to uncover her mysterious past.

It’s a curious choice for a film adaptation as Gravity Rush isn’t really one of Sony’s big IPs. Although critically successful, neither Gravity Rush nor its 2017 sequel made all that much money from sales. PlayStation even dissolved the development team that made both games in 2020, leading them to form their own studio outside of Sony.

Sony has plenty of other film franchises in the works. Following the success of Uncharted, Days Gone is the next IP to receive the movie treatment. Outlander's Sam Heughan is set to play Deacon St. John and Oscar-nominated writer Sheldon Turner will pen the script. Don't expect a release date until the movie gets a director and a few more cast members.
