Killer Klowns From Outer Space game wins weirdest Gamescom announcement

The cult classic Killer Klowns From Outer Space is the latest horror movie to be turned into an asymmetrical multiplayer video game.

With the likes of Friday The 13th and Evil Dead being turned into asymmetrical multiplayer games, we would’ve put our money on Nightmare On Elm Street or The Thing to be the next classic horror franchise to get the same treatment.

Instead, it’s Killer Klowns From Outer Space, the 1988 horror-comedy which never quite evolved into its own franchise, despite several attempts to get a sequel off the ground.

Announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live, Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game pits a team of seven regular citizens of Crescent Cove against another team playing as the three main clowns.

As a citizen, you’ll need to explore the map for loot and weapons to either survive or thwart the alien invasion, whereas the clowns will make use of ‘outlandish abilities’ and ‘zany weapons’ to hunt the citizens down.

It’s in the works at Colombian studio Teravision Games, but has Randy Greenback, the executive director for IllFonic’s Friday The 13th game leading development.

To ensure the game feels authentic, the original movie’s creators, the Chiodo Brothers, have been brought on as executive producers. They even got the movie’s composer John Massori to do the music.

‘It’s a total bucket list item to get to work on the next chapter of such an iconic horror IP like Killer Klowns, especially getting the chance to partner with the original creators of the film and pair them with an incredibly talented development team like Teravision,’ says Greenback.

‘I can’t wait for everyone to see what rockstars they are and the craziness we’re bringing to the genre.’

It certainly sounds like the team has lofty expectations for the game, as it’s described as having a ‘unique approach to hide-and-seek gameplay, customisation and respawn systems, PvPvE, [and] dynamic objectives leading to multiple match results.’

The plan is to launch the game in early 2023 as a live service title, with multiple content updates to follow. There’s no word yet on whether this means the game will be free-to-play or if there will be cross-play.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game releases for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC in early 2023.
