The ridiculously campy and gory Onee Chanbara series (which apparently has a new spelling) will be getting rebooted soon. Previously announced as Onechanbara Origin, the compilation package of the first two PS2 entries in this franchise will be hitting PC and PS4 on October 14, 2020. The Asian region version will arrive a few weeks earlier on September 24, 2020. That’s notable because it will include an English translation, so you can get your hands on it sooner than everyone else.
A new trailer released today reveals a brand new visual style for the series. Dropping the pseudo-realistic look of the past, this remake now employs something of a cel-shaded visual aesthetic to better represent the absurdity that is Onee Chanbara. Why anyone would think that scantily clad women in bikinis fighting zombies needed realistic visuals is beyond me, but it certainly looks much better.
As stated above, Origin is a compilation package of the first two installments of this franchise. Those were titled Zombie Hunters and Zombie Hunters 2 in the US. While not exactly well-received by critics, there’s a set of hardcore fans that love the certain B-movie quality this series embodies. I’ve never exactly found them all too interesting, but I do appreciate wacky anime hijinks.
The remake will be available for $59.99 when it comes out, so I’m not sure how successful it will be. Going up against the likes of Mario 3D All-Stars and even the Crash Bandicoot: N Sane Trilogy will make this a hard sell. Still, I guess there are worse ways you could spend $60.
