There are three classes to choose from in Remnant: From The Ashes and each comes with its own unique starting perks and gear sets. Every class has a specific role to fill in the game and, therefore, they provide differing playstyles.
For players starting out, it’s important to know what each class archetype brings to the table and how the game will differ. Any class is viable in the right hands, but there are some things players should know about these classes before starting.
Hunter Is Long Range
The hunter is the long-range class in the game. They are meant to attack their enemies from afar using Long Guns and other weapons. In solo plays, this can be tough as many enemies are prone to charging and engaging the player in melee; conversely, this class is very co-op friendly.
The player’s job with this class is to sit back and deal damage from afar while teammates keep the enemy occupied. Hunters should be picking off weak units to thin the herd, troublesome units to help teammates, or chipping away at tough foes to bring them down faster.
Scrapper Is Melee
The Scrapper is a melee fighter that gets up close and personal to the enemy. Fighting with hammers, swords, and shotguns, they brawl on the frontlines and are prone to getting surrounded. As a result, a strong weapon, tough armor, and other powerful gear are essential.
The Scrapper’s job is to keep the enemy focused on them through aggro tactics and aggressive play. The Scrapper is a living wall between the enemy and other players in team play and a one-man wrecking ball in solo.
Ex-Cultist Is Mid-Range
The Ex-Cultist operates between the Scrapper and the Hunter at mid-range. This can mean either staying at mid-range or alternating between melee and long-range. For those operating at mid-range, weapons like the Assault Rifle or Submachine gun are key.
The idea is to stand alone or fill gaps. The Ex-Cultist can step up as a melee fighter, pull back and offer long-range support, or stand firm at mid-range by performing a variety of roles with a multi-functional build.
Hunter Is All About Stealth
Another important point for the Hunter is to employ stealth whenever possible. They are meant to scout out the path ahead to gauge upcoming fights. They are also meant to kick off fights by getting the first shot stealthily from the shadows.
Being stealthy employs a bit of patience and strategy. The player must decide who to target first, when the team should attack, and how close they should get for either scouting or attacking. As a result, Hunters dictate the pace of the game and can make or break a fight by how they start it.
Scrapper Is All About DPS
The Scrapper’s job is meant to be as simple as possible: get close to an enemy and deal as much damage as quickly as possible. As a result, the player should focus on explosive DPS with their weapons and look to put down enemies expeditiously.
That isn’t to say their role doesn’t employ any strategy. Scrappers must have situational awareness to ensure the enemy is focused on them while carefully managing their health pool. They also need to be aggressive and not be afraid to take a few hits when fighting.
Ex-Cultist Is All About Support
The Ex-Cultist is focused on keeping teammates alive. This could be literally through healing efforts or strategically by helping the others with their roles. The Ex-Cultist is very strategic-minded as they must balance dealing damage, healing, buffing, and crowd control throughout the battle.
It’s an active class and very team-oriented. A good Ex-Cultist can help a team win battles they aren’t prepared for and a bad one can cripple them in average fights. It’s an important job and often the scapegoat when things go badly.
Hunter Is Team Friendly
The Hunter does very well with a team helping them out. The Scrapper keeps enemies off the Hunter’s back and the Ex-Cultist can boost their damage output while operating as a second layer of defense. The Hunter’s job is immensely easier with the right teammates.
This isn’t to say they can’t function in solo play. A stealth focused Hunter with high critical hit can melt enemies and tear apart bosses. But when things hit the fan and enemies rush in for melee, even the best Hunter will wish they had a team to make their lives easier.
Ex-Cultist Is Solo Friendly
Because the Ex-Cultist can fill just about every role in the game, they are very friendly for solo players. They can get into brawls like a Scrapper and engage enemies stealthily like a Hunter. When the fighting does start or an ambush happens, they have options in how they can handle it.
In a team setting, Ex-Cultists become more focused on helping their teammates than engaging the enemy. Not to say they won’t dish out some damage, but keeping others alive takes precedent. Consequently, some players like playing Ex-Cultist solo but not in team settings, and vice versa.
Scrapper Is Difficult
Melee combat in this game is difficult regardless of whether it’s done solo or in a team setting. Some enemies in different locations fight at a range and will require the solo Scrapper to have a longer range gun on hand to deal with them.
Even in a team setting, their survival can often depend on an Ex-Cultist doing their job to keep them alive. Don’t misunderstand, melee fighting can result in incredible damage output, but only if the Scrapper can catch up to and successfully hit their opponent.
Any Class Can Be Anything
This entry might invalidate the rest of this guide to some extent, but at the end of the day, any class can become anything. A Scrapper with the right gear and investment in traits can functionally be a Hunter, a Hunter with good armor and enough Vigor can be a Scrapper, and so on.
Even the class-specific traits can be obtained by other classes during certain random events in the game. That’s not to say the class choice isn’t important, as it has a major impact on the early and even mid-parts of the game, but players who start as a Hunter and gravitate to an Ex-Cultist will not need to restart everything.
