Square Enix has revealed that the silence surrounding Final Fantasy 16 is intentional as it doesn’t want to “cause speculation.”
In a recent interview with the Washington Post (via VG24/7), Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki Yoshida explains that the radio silence surrounding the title is to curb fan enthusiasm and to make sure the publisher doesn’t cause fans to speculate wildly:
“We don’t want to say something that’s half-baked and cause speculation on the title,” clarifies Yoshida. “With any Final Fantasy fan, depending on which Final Fantasy title is your jam, the point that you get excited will tend to differ.”
As VG24/7 points out, this is likely an attempt to quell the ridiculous hype that accumulated during the lengthy development times for Square Enix’s previous two Final Fantasy titles, Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 15. Both games saw tremendous levels of excitement from some fans and worrying amounts of hostility from others, with the latter’s two-month delay in 2016 causing some to go into meltdown.
Instead, from what Yoshida claims in this latest interview, it sounds like Square Enix will only show more of Final Fantasy 16 once it has something a bit more substantial ready. As Yoshida puts it:
“With Final Fantasy 16, whenever we do reveal more information on it, we hope to show what kind of game it’s going to bring, and what kind of excitement we can bring.”
Final Fantasy 16 was announced back in September last year during PlayStation’s PS5 showcase, but since then we’ve heard very little. There’s currently no news on a potential release date for Final Fantasy 16, although recent rumors have suggested that it might arrive a lot sooner than you think.
Shortly after the game’s announcement, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier revealed in a podcast that Final Fantasy 16 had been in development for at least four years prior to the game’s announcement. If this is true, it would fit with Square Enix’s cautious approach to Final Fantasy 16 as a short period between announcement and release will likely stop fans from becoming impatient. Hopefully, we’ll learn more about the game at some point this year.
