The Facebook Connect livestream event has come and gone, but it’s left us with a few delightful surprises. Perhaps the biggest of them is the reborn Myst coming to Oculus Quest. But before you start running out to buy your first VR headset, the Myst remake is also going to be available for flatscreen monitors too.
The original graphic adventure puzzle game came out in 1993 and has since then been remade and remastered multiple times. The upcoming VR-ready version of Myst is less of a full remake and more of a “reimagining” of the classic title. There will be new art, new audio, and new interactions between the player and the mysterious island they find themselves stranded upon.
“Welcome to Myst: the starkly beautiful island, eerily tinged with mystery and shrouded in intrigue,” reads the description of the all-new trailer. “Explore the deeper connections and uncover a story of ruthless family betrayal.”

There’s not a lot to see about what new gameplay elements will exist, but we know from both Steam and GOG listings that Myst will feature a brand new puzzle randomizer that will add an even greater challenge for Myst veterans. And given the popularity of Myst over the decades since it’s release, there are probably more than a few Myst veterans out there.
Speaking of GOG and Steam, you can wishlist the game on both stores now if you’re less about falling into Facebook’s VR platform and more open to alternatives such as Valve index or HTC Vive. And if you’re not into VR at all, either due to the price or just because it makes you feel queasy, you can still play Myst just fine on a flatscreen monitor.
Myst releases later this December.
