Work on a follow-up to The Outer Worlds has reportedly already begun, although there’s uncertainty on whether it’d be multiformat or not.
After a year of exclusivity on the Epic Games Store The Outer Worlds is finally coming to Steam next week, and rumours are already starting to swirl about a possible sequel.
Niko Partners’ senior analyst Daniel Ahmad, usually a reputable source of industry info, has stated that a new Outer Worlds game is being worked on.
It’s apparently still early days though, as the project is only in the pre-production stage and could very well change into something else.
The Outer Worlds was already in development before the Microsoft acquisition in 2018, when a publishing deal was signed with 2K’s new indie label Private Division.
Obsidian’s survival game Grounded and upcoming fantasy role-playing game Avowed are Microsoft published titles, which does seem to suggest any future Obsidian games will follow suit.
Although it depends if Private Division had an agreement that they would get the publishing rights to any future sequels.
The situation is hard to guess at though, as Microsoft suggested that not all of Bethesda’s future games would be exclusives and could release on other platforms.
And yet only days later they announced next gen remasters of Wolfenstein, Dishonored, and Prey that will not be released for PlayStation 5.
The Outer Worlds is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.
