The One Show: Nadiya Hussain gets emotional over fan messages

As a mental health advocate, Nadiya has spoken out about how she personally copes with a condition that makes her feel like she is “going to die”. Within her own BBC documentary, the Great British Bake Off champion allowed viewers an insight into her structured daily routines and activities she uses to often distract herself from having a panic attack. But it was through one video in particular, that the star shared on Instagram where the chef shared how anxiety left her feeling.

“I’m sharing this video because as a mother and a wife as a 33 year old woman I feel like I should have my s*** together but that’s just me putting yet another expectation on myself and we are all guilty of doing that,” Nadiya wrote.

“Yet there I was helpless again, victim to my anxiety, I could not breathe, move or wash. It was disgusting and embarrassing and I always feel sad and ashamed that I let it get me again.”

The star has coped with anxiety and panic disorder for over 20 years. It affected her throughout the entire series that she appeared on the Great British Bake Off, and still affects her now.

Speaking about the massive hurdles she had to overcome whilst being on Bake Off, prozac by sandoz Nadiya said: “Packed and ready to film my first episode it became a day of many firsts for me.

“First time in a taxi alone, first time on a train alone, first time on the underground alone, first time without my husband to help, first time without my kids.

“My anxiety mounted, I perspired through the missed trains, the sweaty pits and the quiet tears. But I got there.”

Since this point Nadiya’s life has changed dramatically, but the one thing that has remained a constant, is her passion for baking and how she uses it to destress.

Speaking in the Instagram video describing a panic attack back in 2018, Nadiya continued to say: “I had a panic attack last night. It was looming all day, but when it did come I was a little bit shocked, I don’t know why.

“It was so bad I couldn’t even wash myself last night, Abdal (the star’s husband) had to help me get to bed.

“It wasn’t nice, I felt as though it was a waste of an evening, but I am paying for it today.

“I feel tired, I feel like my body can’t move but I’m going to try to get up, move. So if anyone doesn’t know what it looks like, what it feels like, it’s scary, I just wanted to share that.”
The star accompanied her video by offering advice to others, who may also be struggling with “demons”. She recommended fighting against illness and reassuring her followers that it is “okay not to be okay”.

Talking with comedian John Bishop during an appearance on his former show In Conversation With… Nadiya described her condition as a “monster”.

She went on to explain: “Some days the monster shouts in my face, no matter where I turn he will keep shouting at me, I can’t get him out of my face.

“Other days he’s behind me and he’ll tap me on the shoulder a little bit here and there through the day and I can ignore him completely. Other days I can put him in my pocket. He’s always there… My whole life revolves around not falling apart.”

Panic disorder is one of many anxiety disorders where individuals regularly have sudden attacks of fear or panic, according to the NHS.

Although it is common for everyone to experience feelings of anxiety, for individuals like Nadiya these feelings can emerge suddenly and for no apparent reason. They can last anywhere in the region from five to 20 minutes and can occur multiple times a week.

The signs and symptoms to spot that someone is having a panic attack include the following:

After trying various treatments, feeling hopeless that nothing would work, Nadiya found success in therapy, specifically cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

CBT helped Nadiya connect the symptoms of her panic attacks to moments where she genuinely felt her life was in danger. Although a lengthy process, it was important for the star to help understand the source of her anxiety.
