In the UK, the average age for a woman to reach the menopause is 51. However, premature menopause is popular, affecting one in 100 women across the country. New research has revealed that the mental strain on younger and older women experiencing this natural change can often be too much.

Health and Her told that their research revealed that nearly nine in 10 women suffer mental health issues as a direct result of menopause with one in 10 women having suicidal thoughts. Classical symptoms of menopause include:

  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Low mood or anxiety
  • Reduced sex drive (libido).

Problems with memory and concentration.Menopausal symptoms can begin months or even years before your periods stop and last around four years after your last period, although some women experience them for much longer.

More often than not, prednisone for copd people do not take notice of the mental health impacts that the menopause can cause for women – with some devastating effects.

The results are being shared to coincide with Menopause Month in October and World Perimenopause Day on October 11, both designed to educate women to recognise the first symptoms of perimenopause which are most commonly ones relating to mental health.

Of the women who took part in the survey, 77 percent confessed they had never experienced mental health problems prior to entering this stage in their lives, but now experience issues.

Low energy and a lack of motivation is the leading mental health issue suffered by 58 percent of perimenopausal women (rising to 67 percent among 46 to 49 year olds).

This is closely followed by low mood and depression (53 percent), anxiety (50 percent), anger and mood swings (42 percent) and feelings of worthlessness (33 percent).

Almost half of the women avoided meeting with family or friends and said they did not want to get out of bed some days.

Of the 30-plus symptoms of perimenopause, a third of the respondents admitted to regularly losing important items, shouting at their children and suggested their mental health was having a negative impact at home and at the workplace.

Kate Bache, co-founder of Health and Her told “We know from our previous research it takes on average 14 months for women to realise they’re in perimenopause. It can happen before your periods have even stopped.

“Many women are suffering in silence, not even talking to their partner or spouse about it, despite many suffering severe mental health issues that are simply down to a drop in oestrogen levels in their bodies.”

Health and Her has developed a symptom tool to help women identify some of the early signs of perimenopause. The company is educating women with an easy-to-remember acronym: DAMN (Depression, Anxiety, Mood Swings and No Energy) to encourage them to seek help if they are experiencing one or more of these symptoms.

Doctor Deborah Lancastle is a registered and chartered health psychologist with special interest in the psychosocial aspects of women’s reproductive health. She explained: “Many women are surprised by the changes to cognitive function that can occur around the menopause. Psychological problems and low mood can be very common too – anxiety, phobias and panic attacks can occur for the first time.

“These are the symptoms that people don’t physically see, so can be more difficult to deal with.”

During menopause, psychological symptoms can be overbearing, impacting on your physical health as well as affecting relationships at home and in the workplace. The health expert pleaded for people to seek social support, distraction techniques and focus on the positives by getting active and taking time to relax.
