Maquette is a bold puzzle game love story a decade in the making

Puzzle game Maquette was first revealed in 2011 at the Game Developers Conference’s Experimental Gameplay Workshop, a place for developers to showcase new ideas that aren’t quite full games yet. Maquette was a hit, thanks to its ingenious design: The player, in first-person view, manipulates a small-scale model of the game world they’re living in. Objects moved or brought inside the titular maquette are represented at massive scale in the real world. So, drop a regular-sized key onto a gap in the scale model of your world, and a super-sized key will bridge the same gap nearby, opening a new pathway to explore.

It’s a fascinating concept, and is probably best visualized by watching the reveal trailer for Maquette above.

Maquette has changed considerably from its 2011 prototype, which featured a drab game world and maquette. The brightly colored full release will tell a story that “takes players through an adventure of love, loss, and acceptance,” according to a news release.

Annapurna Interactive, the publisher of Outer Wilds, Florence, and Donut County, will publish the recursive first-person puzzle game. Graceful Decay, founded by original game designer Hanford Lemoore, is developing. A Windows PC version is confirmed, but price and release date were not announced.
