Nearly two years after release, Bloodborne and Dark Souls modder Lance McDonald found a new way to view God of War (2018). And with that newfound power, McDonald found a hidden scene of Baldur giving players the finger to end the game.
Instead of the game’s usual no-cut, behind-the-back camera, McDonald can view the game and all of its cutscenes in a free-flowing camera. According to the modder, this project was partially working sometime last year, but imposed some pretty major issues with the game’s menus. Now, McDonald can manipulate time during a scene, and the characters don’t clip into each other — an accomplishment that earned a compliment from Cory Barlog, the game’s director. We’ve reached out to Sony to learn more about the gesture.
You can see McDonald’s full video of the Baldur fight scene in the tweet above.
The tool is impressive, and a really neat new way to look at our 2018 game of the year. But McDonald also found a very in-character Easter egg from the end of the two god’s battle.
At the end of their first fight in God of War, Kratos breaks Baldur’s neck and tosses his body off a cliff. Players see the body fall, but don’t get to watch it plummet all the way down. But with the new camera tool, McDonald was able to follow Baldur’s body all the way into the pit.
Apparently, after Baldur exits the frame, the character model sticks both of his middle fingers up in the air — giving Kratos a final goodbye.
This is, of course, something players could never see in-game. The rude gesture fits surprisingly well with Baldur’s personality — something one of Sony Santa Monica’s developers seems to agree with us on.
We’re not sure if we will see Baldur’s brother, Thor, bite his thumb at Kratos in the God of War sequel we hope is coming. But if Baldur can flip Kratos the bird from beyond the grave, anything is possible.
