PSA – It has also been revealed overnight that as part of the same Ingress Prime event, Shiny Alolan Marowak will also be available.
Pokemon GO players aren't exactly short of Shiny Pokemon to capture at the moment.
Putting aside the recently added Shiny Caterpie as part of the November Field Research and worldwide event that saw Shiny Pinsir introduced, Pokemon GO players have well over 120 Shiny Pokemon in the game already.
BUT, Niantic has just announced a further selection of shiny Pokemon are coming to the game TODAY, in the form of Shiny Cubone and Shiny Ponyta.
The initial announcement was twinned with news about the launch of Ingress Prime. Here's what we've been told:
"Pokemon GO will feature a celebratory in-game event where shiny green Cubone and blue Ponyta will be available for capture. Additionally, players will be gifted free in-game avatar items in support of Ingress Prime."

For anyone who doesn't realise the significance, the two main factions in Ingress (The Enlightened and The Resistance) are coloured coded green and blue. And Shiny Cubone and Shiny Ponyta are also green and blue.
Keep reading for everything you need to know about catching yourself that brand new Shiny Ponyta.
At the time of writing, it's unknown exactly how many ways you can encounter a Shiny blue Ponyta in the game.
Niantic's announcement doesn't make any mention of changes to egg hatches, raid groups or exactly how long this new Ingress Prime Celebration will last.
Although, as soon as that's made clear we'll be sure to update this story.
For the time being though, we would imagine that players will notice an increase in spawns for the Gen 1 Pokemon.
Equally, it's worth remembering that it's not possible to encounter a Shiny Rapidash in the wild.
Also, this goes without saying but when you do find that Shiny Ponya you will need 50 candy to evolve yourself a Shiny Rapidash.
Keep reading as we've broken down all of the potential ways you might be able to encounter a Shiny Ponyta moving forward.
At the time of writing Ponyta is not hatching from eggs.
Ponyta is not currently a raid boss, so that rules that option out.
In the Wild:
Ponyta is spawning in the wild; as mentioned it's not clear if there are increased spawning rates at present.
However, to increase your chances of encountering a shiny, you want to go somewhere spawning as many Ponyta as possible. Especially since Silph Road Research has suggested previously that the base wild encounter shiny rate is roughly 1 in 450.
We'd suggest that to boost your chances you should head over to the Silph Road Global Nest Atlas to find your nearest Ponyta nest, because obviously, the more you encounter, the higher your odds for finding a shiny.
